Nicki Minaj’s Track ‘Fallin 4 U’: Unraveling the Latto Speculation and Grammy Controversy

Nicki Minaj’s recent release, “Pink Friday 2,” sparked speculation among fans about a possible diss toward rapper Latto in the track “Fallin 4 U.” The lyrics raised eyebrows as some believed they hinted at Latto, but Minaj clarified during a livestream that the reference was to “The Little Mermaid,” not aimed at Latto.

Adding to the mix, a Genius writer pointed out Minaj’s acknowledgment of the Little Mermaid connection during a Stationhead listening party, further linking the reference to Halle Bailey’s rendition. Interestingly, Chloë Bailey’s song “Fallin 4 U” on her album “In Pieces” strengthens this connection.

The tension between Minaj and Latto traces back to their disagreement in October 2022 over “Super Freaky Girl.” During this time, discussions surfaced about Minaj’s song potentially landing a nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards instead of in the rap category. Minaj insisted on fairness, stating that if her track was classified as pop, Latto’s “Big Energy” should be included in the same category.

This back-and-forth spilled onto social media, with Minaj labeling dissenters as “Nicki haters or trolls.” Their dispute escalated when Latto attempted to privately resolve things, but Minaj made their conversation public, referring to Latto as a “Karen” and implying a lack of support from her as a fellow Black woman in the industry.

Latto responded by highlighting Minaj’s age compared to her own and suggesting Minaj was trying to intimidate her through subtweets. The tension between the two remains palpable amid public exchanges and differing opinions regarding categorization in music awards.
