Shivan Giri is showcasing his television production skills in the latest series ‘Fracture’. The Mumbai-born film and television producer has just completed filming the thriller which was filmed in the Los Angeles area. We caught up with the trailblazer to talk about ‘Fracture’.
Congratulations Shivan on your continued success as a sought after Producer. You have become one of Hollywood’s most valued talents, from Bollywood to Hollywood. For those who may not know you, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Thank you for having me! I grew up in Mumbai, the home of Bollywood, where my exposure to the film industry nurtured my passion for storytelling. To further develop my skills, I enrolled in a 4-week workshop where I learned the basics of filmmaking. I found the process of writing, directing, and editing to be second nature to me. After the workshop, I was confident that I could work on a film set. So, I moved to Los Angeles to attend film school with a focus on directing. However, I soon realized the value of my work ethic as a Producer and began to sharpen my skills in that area.
Before we dig deep with ‘Fracture’ can you explain what a Television and Film Producer does for a project?
Absolutely! As a television and film producer, my role is to oversee all aspects of a project, from inception to completion. I work closely with the writers, directors, actors, and other crew members to ensure that the project meets its objectives and is delivered on time and within budget. My specific duties may vary depending on the project, but generally, I’m responsible for the development, financing, hiring, creative input, and distribution of the finished product. Ultimately, I’m accountable for bringing all the pieces of a project together and ensuring that it is completed successfully. The skills and expertise of a producer are essential for any film or television production, and I take great pride in my work as a producer.
Let’s talk ‘Fracture’ – what’s it about?
‘Fracture’ is a gripping story that follows the journey of a determined taxi driver, whose son suffers a fractured arm at school. As he tries to uncover the truth behind the Nazi symbol drawn on his son’s cast, he delves deep into the origins of racism, highlighting the importance of challenging prejudiced beliefs and actions that are passed down through generations. The story presents a powerful message of hope and unity, encouraging the audience to stand up against all forms of discrimination and to promote tolerance and inclusivity in our society.
Who else is involved in the project?
The project is helmed by Marilu Godinez, who serves as co-director alongside Joel Novoa, known for directing the Netflix series ‘Cobra kai’. It stars Bruno Bichir, Aaron Staton, and Leon Russom, as well as popular child actors Idris Keith and Dexter Hobert.
Any fun behind the scenes stories?
Yes, quite a few. Many of the background actors were children, and one of our lead actors, Aaron Staton, played a police officer in the film. The children would often be mischievous, leading to a noisy set. However, as soon as Aaron came on set in full police uniform, the children would instantly become quiet and well-behaved. I was greatly facilitated by this, as we were able to easily manage the minor background actors during scenes featuring Aaron in his police officer role, as they believed him to be a real officer (Laughs!).
Is it set to release soon?
So far the pilot episode has been successfully pitched to a major distribution company and an agreement is in place for the development of additional episodes. We anticipate that the project will be released on OTT platforms by December 2023.
That’s exciting! Aside from ‘Fracture’ what else are you working on?
I am currently developing a web series titled ‘Abs of Steel’, which is inspired by my thesis short film of the same name. I am both producing and directing the project. The show is currently in the pre-production stage, and we plan to start filming in June 2023 in Mumbai, India.
Are you active on social media?
Yes, I tend to post my journey on Instagram @shivangiri and my projects are on IMDb.
