In a City Full of History, An Important Story Is Missing

In a City Full of History, An Important Story Is Missing

A recent question about a well-known public space in Manhattan is beginning to draw attention.

Sara Causey, the award-winning biographer of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, recently raised a simple question: why does NYC’s Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza include no signage or markers explaining who he was?

In a brief conversation, she shared what prompted this inquiry and what has happened since.

How did you first notice this?
A friend of mine from Ireland visited the plaza recently and mentioned how peaceful and thoughtfully designed it is. You have trees, seating, and public art exhibits. It’s a nice space.

But what stood out to him was that there was nothing explaining who Dag Hammarskjöld was. No plaque, no statue, no interpretive signage. Nothing that would give a visitor context for the name. He contacted me to find out why this is the case.

Why did that strike you as important?
New York City is actually very good in many places at embedding history into public spaces. You’ll see plaques, small markers, and installations. Things that help people connect with the story behind a location.

So it felt like a missing piece. The plaza has the name, and it has the setting. But without context, most visitors wouldn’t know why it’s called that or who Dag was. And that’s a shame.

What steps have you taken so far?
I’ve reached out to both New York City Parks and the office of City Council Member Virginia Maloney since the plaza is in her district.

I haven’t heard back from NYC Parks, but I did receive a kind response from the council office. They indicated that the idea is something they would consider exploring further and mentioned that their community affairs team will follow up soon.

At this point, I’m waiting to hear more from them. And I’ve made it clear that I’m at their disposal. Whatever I can do to help, I will do.

Are you advocating for a specific change?
Not in a prescriptive way. I’m not trying to say, “It has to be one exact thing.”

It could be something simple—a plaque, a small marker, or even basic interpretive signage. The goal is to provide some context so people understand who Hammarskjöld was and why the plaza bears his name.

Why does this matter to you personally?
Dag Hammarskjöld’s life and work mean a lot to me. His approach to leadership—quiet, principled, and steady—is highly relevant. In many ways, the world is still catching up to Dag. This was a man practicing concepts like psychological safety, inclusion, and workplace belonging decades before we had the nomenclature for them. One thing I’ve learned is that once someone truly encounters Dag, they don’t walk away unchanged.

And the plaza is located so close to the United Nations. It’s not just any location. It feels like a place where a small explanation could be offered in a simple, accessible way.

What happens next?
Right now, it’s a matter of waiting to hear back and understanding what the process might look like.

There may be practical considerations or constraints that aren’t immediately visible from the outside. That’s understandable, especially for a large city like New York.

But I’m plucky and persistent. I’m not going anywhere!

Causey says she plans to continue following up and sharing updates as they become available.
