Social media star Mercedes Blanche is no stranger to creating compelling TikTok’s for her millions of followers. The Canadian has gone viral on multiple occasions with her comedy skits and trending dance moves.
We chatted with Mercedes on what it takes to go viral.
Welcome Mercedes! Tell us about your TikTok’s.
Hi! Thank you for the opportunity. I started 11 TikTok accounts within a 2-year frame and the smallest one is at 1 million followers. I find it oddly comforting and challenging to figure out the algorithm and try to break it through. I mainly did dancing videos at the beginning of my journey and now I am more educational/satire.
What do you enjoy doing most on the platform?
I love to explore the “For You Page”. I tend to blow up with talking videos. I think people find it interesting when you open with a fun fact or just doing something funny for a few seconds.
Which of your videos went viral?
The difference between US and European cultures is very popular. I also do a bit of comedy here and there.
Why do you think that went viral?
People like informational videos in general. They like comparing and rating videos, it’s always great to learn and listen about cultural differences. I like to show people something new or different. They tend to be more attention catchy for some reason. I got 50 million likes total.
What makes a good viral video?
A lot of things combined. I would say critical is the caption, up to 1-minute-long videos, talking point, stating something at the beginning. Also, a funny thing I noticed: If you wear a neon color in the videos, they tend to get more views. People automatically stay longer on colourful videos. Just a little brain trick.
What advice can you give for going viral on TikTok?
Consistency is key! Whenever I start a new account, I post 4-10 times a day! That will give the impression to the algorithm that you are not a bot or spam account. It will put you on the For You Page sooner. You can eventually slow down but starting off I would post very often. Also, another thing is to find your niche and stick to it. For example, if you start off with cooking videos for weeks do not post animal videos after. People who will follow you for cooking videos will unfollow if you switch up to pet content. Stay loyal to your brand. If you want to rebrand for some reason, I suggest doing it slowly.
What type of video would you like to do but haven’t yet?
I would like to do more Get Ready With Me videos. The problem is that I forget to record it and by the time I would like to I am ready already. I will eventually try to get into daily vlogging but as I said the rebranding has to be slow and smooth so I can keep my community.
Does it help to collab with others?
Definitely yes! Especially if you tag them and they tag you. It will show you to their followers and vice versa.
Which trend have you enjoyed the most?
I loved the “Wipe it” challenge when they wiped the mirrors and cosplayed someone for a second. Those were extremely creative. I also love any trends with dogs. They are just adorable.
What’s up next for you?
Movies, movies, movies! I would love to get cast in a show soon.
