Q & A with Comic Marvin D. Phipps
Q: Marvin, you’ve starred in a some quality productions in film! How did you get into comedy?
Marvin: I’ve always been a fan of comedy. I used to watch all the comedy shows when I was a kid, Apollo, Uptown Comedy Club, Def Comedy Jam Comic View, everything. So I always loved comedy, but it wasn’t until I saw an open mic on my space. The host’s name was Lil Rel and the club’s name was Jokes and Notes. I couldn’t believe there was a comedy club in my city that I knew nothing about.
Q: You are not only a talented live performer, but you are also a creative writer and you write your own jokes! Would you say that its an easy process for you?
Marvin: Yes, joke writing process for me is simple or easy. I use my everyday life and I have a special way of seeing things, so it translates well on stage and people love my authenticity and my point of view
Q: What goes through your mind before you get on stage?
Marvin: As I approach the stage, I’m just reminding myself to have fun, stay in the moment, be myself, be patient, don’t rush, and show people the gift that God gave me, When I do that, I have an amazing time, and so does the audience.
Q: Can you share any recent projects or new projects in the works?
Marvin: I’m currently working on my hour special. I’m going to write it, produce it, and fund it myself. I’m very proud of the work I’m doing. I want this special to be amazing and to let people know I’m a force to be reckoned with in comedy.
Q: Congrats on your performance at Black Oak TV! Can you give us an insider how your experience was?
A: Performing for Black Oak TV was a great experience. They are very knowledgeable about comedy and really giving guys like myself a platform to stand out. There are some really great guys over there. They know who’s hot in the game and even if you’re not, they put you on the radar to get you seen. I got love and respect for Black Oak TV. A shout out to Uzo.
Q: How would you describe your year so far in one word?
Marvin: Resilient
