A Guide to the Best Sand for Landscaping

When you’re landscaping your outdoor space, choosing the right sand is essential.

Not all sands are created equal. Some sands have particulates that have a higher percentage of silica than others, and silica is bad for plants when used to make sand for landscaping.

You’ll also want sand that’s not full of tack, which can damage your plants, too. But that’s not all there is to consider when choosing sand for landscaping. Here’s what else to keep in mind.

Construction Sand

This is a coarse form of sand that is strong enough to act as a good filler between larger materials such as stones and rocks. It also provides weight, stability, and strength to the ground. The sand particles are strong enough to withstand being shifted and moved around by rain, wind, and other external forces. Construction sand ensures strong garden pathways and a leveled-out and natural effect on the ground once spread.

Construction sand is also preferred due to its affordability. The cost of purchasing it is significantly lesser than purchasing other kinds of sand varieties. The sand is also low on dust and debris, making it much easier for landscapers to work with. For sand buyers interested in landscaping, construction sand is the best choice.

River Sand

It contains fewer impurities than other types of sand, such as beach sand or manufactured sand, and is typically five times stronger than beach sand. It is also able to support a greater load and has a larger grain size. This larger grain size ensures that it packs tightly and creates a stable base for the landscape.

It also drains well, making it ideal for use around pool areas and on lawns. The natural color of the sand also works well with most landscape designs and doesn’t need to be painted or stained like some other types of sand.

White Sand

Its powder-like texture provides a professional look to any landscaping project, blending easily with any other colors and materials being used. White sand adds a uniform texture to the surface that helps make an area look even and neat. With its mild hue, it easily stands out and catches the eye, making the landscaped area look more attractive.

White sand has also proven to be very easy to use, as its lightweight and uniform grain size make it easy to work with and shape. Whether used for pathways, edging, or laying pavers, white sand is the perfect option. Not only is it easy to use, but its lightness and uniformity help it stay put without the worry of shifting too much.

Selecting the Right Type of Sand for Landscaping

Overall, sand is an affordable and versatile material to use for landscaping projects. Whether you’re improving the look of your backyard or working on something as ambitious as a walkway, sand is one of the most reliable options.
