Proof that a powerhouse performance doesn’t require endless screen time, rising actor Mike Infante (Freaky Tales, No Address) delivers an electric, unforgettable performance in Joshua A. Shah’s provocative short film Initiation.
The film officially made its festival premiere at the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific Film Festival centers on Jay (Preston Yeung), a young man struggling with a severe stutter who makes a desperate bid to navigate street life and afford speech therapy. Inside a correctional facility, Jay crosses paths with Martin (Infante), a charismatic, fast-talking individual deeply embedded in the gang life whose presence permanently shifts the narrative trajectory. Though his scene is compact, Infante steals the screen with razor-sharp cadence, natural swagger, and an effortless blend of humor and underlying heart.
Infante’s portrayal of Martin subverts typical crime-drama tropes, infusing a street-smart character with surprising vulnerability and warmth.
“What initially drew me to Martin was his energy, his spunk, and his gentle spirit,” Infante notes. “He’s a fast talker and a big mouth, and when things go wrong, he’s not afraid to get down and dirty. He’s a fighter when he needs to be, and I really loved that side of him.”
He adds: “But beyond all of that, I think Martin is an angel to the people he meets. Sure, he’s done wrong and he has his flaws, but there’s a good heart underneath it all. That contrast is what really drew me to him. I loved that I could play someone who can be loud, funny, and tough, but still have this genuine, caring spirit underneath it.”
A trailblazing Mexican-American actor living with cerebral palsy, Infante has rapidly built a reputation across Northern California theater and film for his magnetic presence and versatility notably appearing in Lionsgate’s Sundance hit Freaky Tales alongside Pedro Pascal. His high-impact performance in Initiation once again highlights his rare ability to leave a lasting footprint in character-driven narratives regardless of runtime.
Produced by Jesse Reale with associate producer Dan Dan Rodriguez, cinematographer J.P. Emodi, and production designer Jonny Wilson, Initiation continues its acclaimed run on the current festival circuit.
