Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has adopted a one-year-old Shiba Inu named Ranger from Happy Hearts Dog Rescue, according to an announcement posted Friday by the Austin-based nonprofit on X. The news originated from the rescue’s official account, @happyheartsdog, which posted:

Ranger Joins the Musk Household
Ranger, described by the rescue as a one-year-old Shiba Inu, joins Musk’s existing pets, which have previously included another Shiba Inu named Floki. Sources familiar with the adoption said Musk selected the name Ranger in part because SpaceX has internally referred to a next-generation engine concept under that name, evoking exploration and the company’s work on high-performance propulsion systems such as the Raptor family that powers Starship. The connection appealed to Musk as a personal nod to pushing boundaries on Earth and beyond.
About Happy Hearts Dog Rescue
Happy Hearts Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer-run, foster-home-based organization in the Austin area. Co-founders Alyson and Adri launched it in July 2018 after meeting while volunteering with other rescue groups. The group has no physical shelter facility. It pulls dogs from high-kill shelters across Texas—many of them on euthanasia lists—only after a confirmed foster home is in place.
Mission, Impact, and Adoption Process
The rescue’s mission is to find loving homes for dogs that have been forgotten or discarded. Volunteers provide foster care, and the organization supplies food, beds, blankets, toys, and veterinary support so dogs leave with familiar items. Over the years it has placed more than 500 dogs (some reports cite more than 650) into forever homes. Adoption fees typically range from $200 to $250 and cover core first-year vaccines, microchipping, heartworm testing where applicable, deworming, spay/neuter, and preventives while in foster care. The process includes an application, reference and veterinary checks, a meet-and-greet, and a virtual home check.

Musk has deep ties to the Austin region. Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas sits nearby, and limited-liability companies linked to him have acquired several large homes in the upscale West Lake Hills suburb, an affluent, tree-lined area about 15 minutes from downtown Austin. The properties, some described as part of a family compound arrangement for his children and their mothers, include houses in the 6,000- to 9,000-square-foot range on large lots. Musk splits time between the Austin area and a far more modest prefabricated home he rents from SpaceX in Boca Chica, near the company’s Starbase launch site in South Texas. Neighbors in West Lake Hills have noted increased security when he is in town.
