Chinese soprano Xinran Du took on the central role of Diane Tran in Opera Maine’s 2026 production of Bound, a contemporary chamber opera by composer Huang Ruo with a libretto by Bao-Long Chu.
Presented at Portland Stage in Portland, Maine, Bound is based on the real-life story of Diane Tran, a Vietnamese-American high school student whose circumstances attracted national attention and sparked discussion around family responsibility, economic hardship, education, cultural identity, and the American legal system.
Du’s portrayal placed her at the dramatic center of the production. As Diane, she depicted a young woman attempting to reconcile personal ambitions with the responsibilities she carries for her family. The role calls for both vocal control and dramatic sensitivity, particularly as the character moves between moments of pressure, determination, vulnerability, and resilience.
Opera Maine presented the work as part of its 2026 season, with Richard Gammon directing and Lance Inouye conducting. Huang Ruo’s score combines elements associated with Eastern and Western musical traditions, while Bao-Long Chu’s libretto focuses closely on the emotional and social pressures shaping Diane’s experience.
The production also incorporated additional cultural elements into its musical world. Vietnamese musician Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ performed on the đàn bầu, a traditional Vietnamese monochord, contributing a distinctive sound to the opera’s exploration of identity, family, and cultural memory.
Du’s involvement in the production received regional media attention. Coverage by the Portland Press Herald identified her as the soprano starring in the role of Diane Tran, while Opera Maine also featured Du in its official materials for the production.
The role added another contemporary work to Du’s growing professional repertoire. Based in New York City, Du holds a degree in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music and has built performance experience across opera, concerts, and collaborative artistic projects.
Her stage repertoire includes First Woodsprite in Dvořák’s Rusalka, Setsuko Kobayashi in Jack Perla’s An American Dream, and Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. She has also appeared with organizations including Opera on Tap and The Opera Next Door, working across both traditional operatic repertoire and newer works.
During her engagement with Opera Maine, Du participated in the company’s 2026 Studio Artist Program. In addition to performing Diane in Bound, she undertook a role study of Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
Du has also appeared in programming presented by EastWest Artistry NYC, a New York-based organization producing interdisciplinary concerts and cultural events that bring together artists and audiences from different backgrounds.
Her work in Bound reflects a broader artistic trajectory that spans established repertoire and contemporary storytelling. The role of Diane Tran, in particular, offered Du the opportunity to engage with a character shaped by questions of identity, responsibility, family, and personal freedom.
With Bound, Du adds a substantial contemporary role to her performance record while participating in a work that brings Asian-American experiences and cross-cultural themes to the operatic stage.
