Mums The Word have always felt like a band built for movement. Not just musically, but physically. Their songs don’t sit still, and neither do their shows.

Since forming in 2016, the Philadelphia and South Jersey crew have mixed funk, rock, reggae, and hip-hop into something that feels loose but intentional. Three albums in, starting with Get It Right! in 2019 and Get It Wrong in 2022, they’ve continued to build a catalog that leans heavily into groove and live energy. Their 2024 self-titled record Mums The Word feels like a natural step forward.

Tracks like “Underneath The Trees” show that balance. It’s one of their more laid-back moments, but still packed with rhythm. The groove carries it, giving the track a warm, almost hypnotic feel that sticks after a single listen. It’s the kind of song that feels made for outdoor sets and late-night festival slots.

“Rosie,” on the other hand, hits harder. It leans into rock with a sharper edge, pushing things forward with a punchier sound. There’s a sense of urgency in it, but it never loses that danceable core the band is known for. It feels big, loud, and built for a crowd.

That mix of styles sets the tone for what’s coming next. Their upcoming single, “Polyjam,” taps into the band’s love of collaboration and free-flowing creativity. Early signs point to a track that doesn’t stick to one lane, pulling together funk, hip-hop, and jam influences with the same live-wire energy they bring to the stage.

With nearly a decade behind them, Mums The Word sound locked into what they do best. If “Polyjam” lands the way it’s shaping up to, it’s another reason to keep them on your radar.
